Hit The Bottle

Smoking’s not the only vice that effects skin care and places your skin under strain – alcohol is also a culprit. While enjoying the odd glass of red wine, packed with antioxidants, after a long, hard week, has been shown to benefit women’s health in general, particularly cardiovascular health, drinking higher amounts, frequently plays havoc with your complexion. Alcohol dilates blood vessels, which can worsen certain conditions, like rosacea, psoriasis and acne, and can eventually lead to ‘spider veins’ (those tiny, red broken capillaries). Alcohol also has a drying effect on the skin as it’s diuretic, and depletes the body of Vitamin C and the B vitamins, both needed for healthy skin, hair and nails. Another common problem associated with ageing is joint stiffness – alcohol contributes to joint pain and stiffness, particularly in the case of gout.
